“Second-largest Training Ship in the World”

BAP Unión (Spanish: Buque Armada Peruana Unión) is 4-mast barque commissioned in 2016. Her namesake is a nod to the legacy of the 1865 corvette that saw participation in the War of the Pacific under the leadership of renowned Peruvian Naval Officer, Miguel Grau. This latest ship is a symbol of Peruvian pride, built wholly by the Shipping Marine Industrial Services of Peru (SIMA). With 34 sails, length of 115.7m, beam of 13.5m, and displacement of 3,500 tons, BAP Unión is the second-largest training ship in the world and the largest sail vessel in Latin America.

“Ambassador of the Seas for the World”

Apart from being a live classroom to complement the training process of naval cadets, BAP Unión also doubles as an ambassador of Peru for the world on training trips. Cadets take on the role of diplomatic hosts on scheduled visits, promoting maritime knowledge, traditions and unique aspects of Peruvian culture to the world.

A 255 strong crew will bring the ship to 16 countries, 20 ports in this 311-day, 34,216 nautical mile trip around the world. 72 days will be spent in port, where diplomatic ties will be reaffirmed between Peru and host nations, and local members of the community will be able to visit the “Floating Peruvian Showcase” for a slice of what Peru has to offer.
