Hosted at the RNAS Yeovilton airfield, the Royal Navy International Air Day 2019 is the first of the series of airshows formally called the RNAS Yeovilton International Air Day. RNAS Yeovilton is the home of the Fleet Air Arm helicopters and this airshow features many of the types operated by the Royal Navy and also a healthy mix of international participants.
In this series, we had a great opportunity to fly a few days of air to air missions catching the participants flying in for the show. Some of the highlights incude a formation of Merlin helicopters over the southern coast of England, the Italian Air Force P-72A MPA, a pair of RAF Tucanos flying their last airshow season before retirement from service and historic aircraft from Cocardes Marine who brought the Fouga CM175 Zéphyr, Morane-Saulnier MS760 Paris and the Breguet Br.1040 Alizé. The Alizé is a carrier borne anti-submarine warfare aircraft flown by the French Navy for more than 30 years and this particular aircraft is the last airworthy example today. Another ultra rare example is the Wessex HU5 helicopter which is also the only example of the helicopter in the world today.
