U.S Navy aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) steamed through the Singapore Strait on the afternoon of 16 June 2025. Headed west, she was accompanied by elements from Destroyer Squadron 9: USS Gridley (DDG-101), USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG-123) and USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG-54).
Scheduled for decommissioning in 2026, the 50-year old USS Nimitz — affectionately known as the “Old Salt” for being the U.S. Navy’s oldest Supercarrier in service — is currently on her final deployment. Carrier Air Wing 17 is currently embarked, with the F/A-18E/F EA-18G, E-2D, C-2A and MH-60R/S.
Recent reports indicate that USS Nimitz had cancelled a scheduled visit to Da Nang, Vietnam, due to “an emergent operational requirement“. With the security situation in the Middle East deteriorating, the carrier’s current course suggests a repositioning into or near the U.S CENTCOM (Central Command) area of operations.
